step up

Established in 1977, Step Up provides assistance and support to young homeless people, aged between 16 and 25 years.

The need for Step Up was established through local community groups recognising the gap in provision of supported housing for young people, predominantly young people from the black and ethnic minorities.

Step Up is committed to providing a high quality housing service aimed at empowering vulnerable and socially disadvantaged young people to acquire the skills, confidence and economic status to live independently.

STEP UP Offers:

A support and advice operation to young people on a range of issues including:

  • Benefits advice.
  • Life skills – motivation, assertiveness etc.
  • Managing a licence/tenancy agreement.
  • Emotional support.
  • Resettlement and move on advice.

These are just some of the ways in which we assist young people.
We work with each young person on their individual needs.

Step Up manages 10 supported housing schemes and offers provision for up to 95 young people at any one time. The project provides a comprehensive housing and support service including an out-of-hours service run by evening support workers.

Step Up also offers a resettlement service across all schemes. This service aims to assist young people to move into their own accommodation and live independently in the community by offering a range of advice, support and information for a period of up to one year. Step Up works with over 160 young people, each year, and offers information and advice on the telephone to many more young people.
