We are celebrating Refugee Week 2024 at the Renewal Programme!
Refugee Week is a celebration of the stories, diversity and resilience of Refugees everywhere, created by Refugee Week in 1998. Each year, Refugee Week focuses on a specific theme, this year, the theme is ‘Our Home’.
At the Renewal Programme, we aim to help and support Refugees through our Refugee and Migrant Programme. Our project exists to support refugees, migrants and asylum seekers, living in Newham, who are seeking refuge from disadvantaged conditions. This year, to celebrate the theme of ‘Our Home’, we are holding a Community Hub event on the 19th June. Our event will showcase the diverse culture of our community, and highlight the amazing stories from our service users and volunteers!
Food is one of many meanings of home, and to show this, we have invited our volunteers to cook delicious dishes from their home countries, sharing what home means to them. Last year, we opened our kitchen and enjoyed food from Georgia, Nicaragua and Honduras. We look forward to experiencing this again!
Many of our service users, including our volunteers and adult education learners are refugees or asylum seekers themselves. We are grateful to be able to learn about the stories and backgrounds of the people at the heart of the Renewal Programme. Our core values are Diversity, Inclusion, Collaboration and Empowerment, as part of this, we create safe spaces with our staff and volunteers, such as our Community Hub, Manor Park Oasis, classrooms and youth programmes, that include and empower our service users. We help build communities and provide support for those who need it most. For many, the Renewal Programme is a home.
