Meet Mohammed, Newham’s young fencing champion and one of our young people who attends some of our youth tuition sessions. Mohammed started fencing at the age of 7 after reading an article in the Newham Magazine about Newham Swords.
The club was founded by Linda Stratchan and Pierre Harper who are both Olympians and Commonwealth champions. Linda is originally from Forest Gate and has a passion to share her sport with people in the borough.
From his first session, Mohammed loved the sport and soon started competing. Under Linda and Pierre’s coaching, he was able to compete both nationally and international and is currently in the England squad.
The sport has given him more confidence, focus and the opportunity to make new friends with whom he shares a passion for fencing. Mohammed is due to compete in the British Youth Fencing Championships in Sheffield during May 2022.
